Officials at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have officially removed lecturers who were indicted of sexual harassment from their respective positions within the institution. The decision was made by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Charles Esimone, following ongoing investigations into alleged cases of sexual harassment by certain lecturers.
According to PUNCH Newspaper, in a press statement issued by Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Special Adviser on Public Relations and Special Duties to the Vice Chancellor, it was emphasized that the university did not witness any form of protest. The statement also did not mention the names of the lecturers involved.
The statement confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation into the alleged sexual harassment incidents. The Vice Chancellor promptly took action by removing the lecturers from their official positions and issuing strong warning letters to those affected within their respective departments.
Despite the allegations of sexual harassment, the statement revealed that the students who made the accusations were not forthcoming to testify before the investigation panel. However, the Vice Chancellor held a meeting with the affected departments, expressing the university’s displeasure and warning lecturers and staff against actions that could tarnish the institution’s reputation.
Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor established a dedicated telephone number for students to report any form of harassment by staff, particularly cases of sexual harassment. The university affirmed its commitment to protecting students and addressing all allegations of sexual harassment confidentially and with utmost seriousness.
